- I used to take that for granted.
- Reflecting upon your question, the only reason for my
- conviction seems to be that the manufacturers of serial I/O
- boards almost always ship their boards configured with a
- 9-pin connector for COM1 and a 25-pin connector for COM2.
- Of course one may use adapters to get around this, if it is
- not selectable by on-board jumpers or otherwise.
- I also took for granted that COM1 was to use IRQ4 and
- COM2 was to use IRQ3. Had to do, so I believe, with IRQ3
- being served before IRQ4, that is, in the rare event that
- both peripherals at the same instant request the attention of
- the I/O circuitry, IRQ3 would have precedence, so the modem
- on COM2 would be served before the mouse on COM1.
- As to why they did not in the first place make the modem
- use COM1, my guess is that some time back more people used to
- have mices than modems. It don't know whether it is still
- imperative, but with MS-DOS 4.0 you had to use the COM ports
- in an ascending order, not leaving gaps. You could not use
- COM3 as your one and only serial port, for instance.
-
- I'm having problems myself with my two serial ports after
- installing WIN95. On COM1 I have an old 3-button Genius
- mouse, on COM2 a ZyXEL 2864 Elite modem. Many programs sort
- of go to sleep until I touch the mouse or just bang a fist
- onto the table, thus activating the mouse.
- I don't have the slightest idea what is wrong, but I'm
- initiating a narrowing-down process. I welcome any
- suggestions and also comments to the above reflections on
- serial port usage.
